Why are you riding fixed-gear? Is it any good?
Sometimes, people ask me Why are you riding fixed-gear? Is it any good? and I always answer: Frankly, it really sucks. It’s a pain uphill and downhill. It’s dangerous (‘cos brakeless) and slower most of the time too. Don’t do it. Though, I should add that I love it because it’s a real fun! Here’s why.
Geometries made for fun
Not every frame is like this, but many are, especially my Parallax. It’s agile and responsive and cuts tight turns like butter. It’s short and can squeeze through traffic, fast! It’s high and unstable and invites you to lean into corners as if riding MotoGP. Slam that stem, slap on flat-bars and you’ve got all this with power steering.
It demands from the rider
There are only three gears: in the saddle, standing up and walking[1]. The latter is reserved for ‘extreme’ situations and generally can be avoided with enough force or lack of fear. The fact with the remaining two is that there’s not much free choice. The bike chooses for you. Going uphill, the only way for staying in the ‘first gear’ is to keep your cadence hence speed hence ramp up the power. And once I’m standing up in the pedals my race mode just fires instinctively. What’s the point of wriggling under the forces of this stupidly high gear if I’m not giving it all I have?
Then there’s also the illusion of inverted power. Riding single speed it seems that the slower you go the harder it gets. Yeah, we all know that force ≠ power and your heart rate will confirm that too. Anyway, it just feels natural to accelerate vigorously to get to the optimal cadence as soon as possible or to sprint up hillocks to avoid dropping out of it.
Fixed gear is comparatively harder but at the same time it encourages you to push harder.
The flow is real
“On fixie you just get into this flow…” You probably heard this one. The flow is a concept that’s hard to explain. Many activities can get you into flow. Riding a bike, a car or a paraglider, writing a blog post, programming or opening beer bottles. Most people have an intuition of what it is like to be in the flow and I won’t try to describe that here. Let’s just assume it exists and that it’s a good and fun place to be.
I believe fixed gear makes it really easy to get into the flow. In fact, it often demands it (just as the power) and can punish you for being out of it. Especially in heavy traffic. You can’t stop (quickly) and all your senses and instincts must be focused on your path, predicting the unpredictable and planning escape routes, constantly re-evaluating changing environment and executing the plan. This takes all of (my, at least) concentration and leaves no room for other thoughts. It puts me in the flow.
Mastering track bike on the streets is not as much about physical skills as about being able to put the mind into this state of 100% concentration. Kinda like meditation. Sometimes, after a proper ride, I feel like I just meditated.
The Silence
Fixies are really quiet. I usually appreciate this when cruising stoned through a forest at night and I barely hear myself. Suddenly, I’m just gliding over the road, my bike and body not being there. I become a mere immaterial observer having no effect on this world. Just as dipping into a pensieve.
Legs control it all
I enjoy how I can both accelerate and decelerate with just my legs. It makes the ride feel more fluid and less jagged compared to when I can just jam on the brakes. This contributes to the flow feeling. It also moves my favorite game up another level. I reserve this game for when I’m too tired to be in the flow and I just wanna get peacefully to the destination. The goal is simply to ride no-handed as far as possible through the city. With fixed-gear it’s easy ‘cos you can brake.
PS: We tried to bike-pack on fixed-gears a few times. This is no fun. Don’t do that.
